Adaptive Sampling
- Question is, how do we spend our 40 samples during this spring's M0 deployment?
- We will consider two scenarios:
- high nitrate, high salinity (an upwelling event)
- rising nitrate, dropping salinity
The thought is to trigger on high and low nitrate peaks/troughs. We are not moving the 'instrument' so can't use yo-yo methodology. But can use tidal cycle. 1. Must track long-term background nitrate levels. Then, peaks are defined as 1.5x higher than background.
2. Also can compare to average peak height over last 7 days (e.g.).
However we trigger, there will be a 1-day lockout time. Then a control sample every 3-4 peaks where nitrate is lower than monthly average by 1/2.

3. The second part of this deployment is related to CANON, and we'll do an archive and a full phase, and we KNOW the event is coming. Thus, ESP waits until threshold is reached and hten it fires when water mass is over it. This is fundamentally different than the scenario above in 1&2. Chris Preston summarized these two approaches in the below graphic.

In the last 2 weeks of the deployment, there's enough time to do 15 "events".
WHOI Deployment Issues
1. Current location is 8.2nm offshore. WHOI wants the EOM buoy near the NH buoy. This is untenable with our surface expression design. Could we raise our buoy? Talked about using EOM mooring as a repeater. Lots of issues.
Ideal case is we are in a place where we are our own entity.
May raise shore station antenna; will talk to WHOI>
Will check to see if WHOI can provide 800+lb anchor so we don't need to ship. 2. Must talk to Theresa to begin the shipping issue. We will be sending ESP-Bruce, a surface mooring, and many spares (bugees, etc.)2. Began discussion of shipping container needed. Maybe a 10' one, half our current van size? It will need to be temperature controlled.
Jdf
1. Electronics box is the difficult. We've found a pressure housing but unclear about connectors.
2. The minimal setup would be a temperature self-logger; still waiting for one to arrive from Pete.
3. Brent to talk to data-logger builder to understand how to communicate with it.
Local Machines
1. Bruce has had high temp calibration. Then needs QC test. Then full-phase testing @ appropriate temps.
2. Roman will start assembly of MOE tomorrow. Chris P working on Moe's MFB.
